The Shock

We never thought this could happen here. Most of us are mortified if we get a speeding ticket or even a parking ticket. To break the law is a kind of disgrace for most of us. We don’t park in no parking spaces, we don’t throw trash on the sidewalk, and we never pass a school bus. We grow up believing that “the law” is, in a way, sacred. It is the security blanket for our society.
Now, to see the one who was elected to be our president, the world representative of our country and our people, the standard barer for our beliefs – to see that man defy the laws and to break any he chooses, and to insult and defame the judges who protect the laws – it is shocking and heartbreaking. We ordinary citizens never imagined such a situation. I keep shaking my head with all my friends, and saying ,”How did this happen? How did we get to this point?”
In school I learned about Hitler and Stalin, and I lived through the fear of the Cold War, and I always enjoyed the “They and us ” feeling. The United States was not like that. We had laws that protected us – all of us. No one could knock down my door, come in and take me off to a jail or a prison. No one could take my property or deny me a voice . The law protected all of us and it protected us even from the president. If THIS president does away with those protections, the next one will not have them in his way. Those protections will be gone forever. Cruel and despotic people may follow this man and be free of any constraints because of the destruction he has wrought. I may not be here. You may not be here, What do we want for the future of our children and our nation? Law and order, or one man in complete control?
